Founder & CEO
Inspired by the potential of the cloud and the benefits it brings to consumers, Roger, together with Alex and Bertrand, founded Upthere to build a team focused on creating cloud-based consumer products.
Prior to Upthere, Roger worked to solve the technical challenges of data computation and storage in distributed networks. He spent his formative engineering years on Oracle’s kernel team, where he ultimately led the development and engineering teams that pioneered heterogeneous distributed technologies. Roger was also General Manager at MongoDB, and he led a division at Apple.
Roger serves on the advisory boards of Analytica, Infobright, Healthy Cities Tutoring, and Shmoop. He earned a BS in Computer Science from Saxion HogeSchool Enschede, Netherlands.
Founder & Vice President, Business Development
Alex founded Upthere with Roger and Bertrand and brings a wealth of experience in storage and content management. Prior to Upthere, he helped incubate and grow the successful developer and partner ecosystem at MongoDB. Alex also founded Kazeon, a provider of file management solutions for the banking, insurance, and healthcare industries. Kazeon was later acquired by EMC. Before that, he directed product management for the WAN business unit at Broadcom and led their entry into the storage market. Earlier in his career, Alex managed sales at MMC Networks, a leader in IP switching and processing.
Alex earned a BS in Electrical Engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology.
Vice President, Product
Chris has extensive expertise in designing and developing consumer Operating Systems. He joined Upthere in 2012 after spending more than 15 years at Apple. While at Apple, he led product marketing for OS X, shipping every release from the first OS X Public Beta to the final cat release, Mountain Lion. Before that, he managed Apple’s NetBoot Server product and an early version of Mac OS X Server.
Chris earned two BS degrees from the University of Maryland, College Park.
Vice President, Engineering
Jessica has spent a majority of her career leading engineering teams that build successful products. Before joining Upthere in 2014, Jessica was Chief Technology Officer at Bandpage, a music technology startup. Previously, she was an early executive at Tapulous, which developed Tap Tap Revenge. Tap Tap Revenge gained more than one million players in its first month and was the third-most-downloaded app from the Apple App Store in 2008. In 2010, Tapulous was acquired by The Walt Disney Company, where Jessica served as Vice President of Product, Engineering, and Operations for Disney Mobile Games.
In 2011, Fast Company named her one of the Most Influential Women in Technology. Jessica also advises startups including Bandpage and The Hobby.
Jessica earned a BA from Dartmouth College.
Vice President, Operations
Kai brings significant experience in personal cloud storage to Upthere. Prior to joining in 2013, Kai was at Carbonite, helping to lead the company from an early-stage startup to a publicly-traded company. While at Carbonite, he built and led the Production Operations, Information Technology, and Marketing Analytics teams. Previously, Kai was Director of Operations at Maven Networks, an online video platform provider which was acquired by Yahoo!.
Kai was named CIO of the Year in 2012 by Boston Business Journal. In 2013, he was named as one of Computerworld’s National Top 100 IT Leaders.
Kai earned an MS in Engineering Management from Tufts University and a BS in Management from Boston University.
General Counsel, Secretary, And Vice President, Business Operations
Hank joined the team in 2013 after advising the founders since the company’s inception.
Helping early stage startups and working closely with entrepreneurs throughout his career, Hank brings years of experience to Upthere. Hank was previously a partner at Troutman Sanders, where he specialized in venture capital, privacy, security, M&A, and intellectual property.
Hank earned a JD from Vanderbilt University and a triple-major BA in History, Religious Studies, and Political Science from the University of California, Riverside.
Vice President, Marketing
With a successful track record of driving go-to-market strategies for web products, Mekhala brings 10 years of marketing leadership to Upthere. Prior to joining Upthere in 2014, Mekhala served as Director of Product Marketing at LinkedIn, leading the marketing efforts for many of LinkedIn’s monetization products. Before that, Mekhala led Acquisition Marketing for AdWords at Google, where she built a high-performing, multi-channel acquisitions marketing program.
Mekhala earned a BE in Information Science and Engineering from Bangalore University, India. She also earned an MBA from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.
Thomas’s career has focused on solving difficult technical challenges with game-changing approaches. Prior to joining Upthere in 2013, Thomas worked on the software management of the world’s first ARM-based server at Calxeda. At Transmeta, Thomas worked on the Efficeon microprocessor which transformed the industry. He also worked at NVIDIA and Soft Machines.
Thomas earned a Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of California, Irvine and an MS in Computer Science from ETH Zurich.
Chat’s background in developing large-scale storage solutions brings him to Upthere. Prior to joining the company in 2013, Chat worked at Carbonite, where he managed the growth of their storage infrastructure to more than 100PB.
Chat earned an MS in Computer Science from the University of New Hampshire and a BE in Computer Science from Maharashtra Institute of Technology in India.
Android & Windows Lead
Martin brings years of Android, Java, C++, Computer Graphics, and API design expertise to Upthere. Before joining the company in 2012, Martin was Chief Architect for the Cascades UI toolkit, which powers the UI of Blackberry 10 devices. Martin was also an architect and lead at Sun Microsystems for the JavaFX Production Suite.
Martin earned an MS in Information Technology, specializing in Computer Graphics, from the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen, Czech Republic.
iOS & OS X Lead
Daniel’s Apple platform knowledge and experience with app development and design brings him to Upthere where he leads the iOS and OS X teams. Prior to joining Upthere in 2013, Daniel worked at Apple as a Software Engineer for OS X. He served as a lead engineer on the inaugural version of the Mac App Store and subsequently managed that engineering team.
He earned a BS in Computer Science from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.
Becky brings years of expertise in API design and object-oriented architecture to Upthere. Prior to joining in 2014, Becky was a Technical Lead and Senior Software Engineer at Google. Previously, Becky worked at Apple where she contributed to every release of OS X from its first Developer Preview through Leopard.
Becky earned an MS in Computer Science and a BS in Mathematics, both from Stanford University.
Brent’s experience in building consumer web platforms led him to Upthere. Prior to joining Upthere in 2015, Brent worked at PayPal as a Lead Node.js Application Engineer and UI Engineering Manager. Previously, Brent held the titles of Managing Partner, Senior Web Developer, and Senior Software Engineer at companies including Constant Contact, Bank of America, and GEM Multimedia.
Brent earned a BS from Ohio University.
An established designer, Laurent brings Upthere’s products to life through consumer-friendly design. Prior to joining Upthere in 2013, Laurent was a Human Interface Designer at Apple. He worked on various aspects of OS X, including visual and interactive design. Before that, Laurent worked with small award-winning app developers for OS X and iOS.
Laurent earned a BS in Visual Communication with a minor in Computer Information Systems from Ecole de Communication Visuelle in France.
Head of Communications
DJ comes to Upthere with extensive communications experience across consumer and enterprise technology companies. Before joining Upthere in 2014, DJ was Director of Global Product Communications at Yahoo, where she managed worldwide communications for Yahoo!’s products and technology. DJ also worked at Golin/Harris, NEC, and RiverSoft.
DJ earned a BS from the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism at Ohio University.
Grisha brings 20 years of networking architecture expertise to Upthere. Before joining the company in 2014, Grisha was Principal Architect for the Bytemobile T-product line at Citrix. His work represented a fundamental change in traffic management for mobile networks. Grisha was also a Principal IP Architect at Juniper Networks, where he led strategy and acquisitions, and system architecture.
Grisha earned an MS in Computer Science and Operations Research from Stanford University and a BS in Applied Mathematics from Moscow University.
Praveen brings years of experience in test strategy, test methodology, and test automation frameworks to Upthere. Prior to joining in 2013, Praveen was a Senior QA Manager at Intuit. Previously, Praveen was at Mint.com, CSC and Aditi Technologies, leading projects for various clients including, Blue Cross Blue Shield and Microsoft.
Praveen earned an MS in Information Technology from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, and a BS in Mechanical Engineering from Nagarjuna University.

Founder & Director
Prior to founding Upthere, Bertrand was Senior Vice President of Software Engineering at Apple. He oversaw every release of OS X through Snow Leopard and initiated the project that became iOS. He personally developed many of the technologies that form the basis of Cocoa and CocoaTouch. Bertrand joined Apple through the acquisition of NeXT, where he worked on NeXTSTEP and OpenStep. Previously, he worked at France’s INRIA and Xerox PARC.
Bertrand earned a Ph.D. in Computer Science from Orsay University, Institute of Technology, France.

Since joining KPCB in 1980, John and his partners have backed some of the world’s most successful entrepreneurs including Larry Page, Sergey Brin, and Eric Schmidt of Google; Jeff Bezos of Amazon.com; Scott Cook and Bill Campbell of Intuit; and Mark Pincus of Zynga. John’s passion is helping entrepreneurs create the “Next Big Thing” in mobile and social networks, greentech innovation, education, and economic development. John serves on boards in the areas of Internet technologies and greentech.
